According to legend, Eau Claire was named when French explorers canoeing down the muddy Chippewa River encountered a clear-running tributary and exclaimed, “Voici l'eau claire!" ("Here is clear water!")

Located in the heart the Chippewa Valley, this area is known as the “Unexpected Wisconsin,” because it’s much more than cow-grazing farmland.

Thanks to its rolling hills, lazy rivers, four-season sports and outdoor festivals and events, Eau Claire has much to offer the outdoorsy type. But it’s also a gem of a city. Add its population to the nearby surrounding communities, and the Eau Claire metropolitan area is home to 115,000 people.
